There have been three
major turning points in my development as a trainer and leader
of salespeople.
The
first occurred when I decided, after fifteen years, to ‘retire’
from a major financial institution on the West Coast.
The reason that I retired is because I noted that most people
were stuck in their jobs out of fear, with little or no recognition
of the potential for greatness that lies within them.
I had to find out if people (especially
myself) could break the bonds the hold that corporate America
seems to have over most of them through the use of fear and
greed, and I did. This is when I went into sales,
on a commission-only basis, and learned that I could (and was)
a lot more valuable then I ever would have been by staying in
the ‘safe’ environment of the financial institution.
The second
occurred seven years later and was a result of having, finally,
fallen in love with the sales process and profession.
This is where I noted that most people in sales got into it
by accident, and that most of those who were in sales drifted
from job to job until it was too late to do anything else.
In other words, there was no such thing as career planning in
sales. So, I decided to plan my career in sales, and the
rest is history. I went from
a well-paying salaried job in sales to a commission-only opportunity
selling a collection system. In hindsight,
that turned out to be the toughest product to sell, and the
best move that I ever made, for it forced me to learn what professional
sales is all about. I have been doing it and teaching
it ever since (23 years).
The third
occurred eighteen years ago when I
realized the difference between being a manager and being a
leader. I realized that up to that point although
I had the ability to have people love working for me, I was
doing it more for me than I was for the people who trusted me
with their careers. It was in 1984 that I realized that
the essence of leadership was all about forgetting about oneself
and concentrating on providing for, serving, guiding, coaching
and inspiring others. Since that time I have noted that
the people with whom I have the privilege of working have far
exceeded anything that those who I worked with before 1984 ever
did.
